As seen above these are hammers
of a typewriter. These hammers swing up from
there position and strike a thin film of ink and
sandwich it between the paper and the hammer.
This leaves an imprint of whatever character was
struck. |
After the hammer has struck the
paper and ink a spring pulls the hammer back
down to its original position.

How does the hammer go up in the
first place?
When someone presses a key the force they apply
on the key then applies a torque onto a lever
that gives a torque onto the arm of the hammer
causing it to swing upward.
