What is Big Mountain Snowboarding?

There is no precise definition for big mountain snowboarding. If you buy a big mountain snowboard it will be one that is designed for steep slopes and deep powder. If you enter a big mountain snowboarding competition you will be judged on your ability to stylishly navigate your way down a difficult mountain that does not have designed runs. If you tell someone you are going to go big mountain snowboarding it means you are heading to large difficult terrain that is not accessed through a normal resort. The terrain is instead accessed through a variety of other methods including but not limited to hiking, snow machining, dog sledding or by helicopter.

How is Physics Involved?

As with anything that takes place in the universe if something is happening then physics is always involved. Big mountain snowboarding is no different and because it is such a diverse sport there are many different physics questions that can be asked. One example is how moisture content affects the coefficient of kinetic friction for a snowboarder. Another example is looking at why boards are shaped different ways for different types of terrain and conditions. Finally we could look at the physics involved in getting to the top of a mountain without using a chairlift.
