Energy Transport in a Shear Flow
This image shows that in a flow with a strong velocity shear, there is strong mixing in the lower energy regime, but almost no mixing at all in the high energy regime. This accounts for why tropical energy cannot penetrate into the interior of Alaska when the arctic high pressure dominates.
