Metal in a Microwave

So what really happens if you microwave a spoon?

spoon

More than likely nothing at all.  However, the answer could be very different if instead a CD was placed in the microwave oven. Remember that metal reflects microwaves. Indeed, this is why the walls of a microwave oven are made of metal. So microwaving food in a metal bowl is not a good idea because the microwaves will reflect off the container and not reach the food, but it shouldn't cause a fire. Sparking happens when metal is placed in a microwave oven that is very thin, or that has sharp edges.
