So, then, what will happen when our Sun dies? Will it collapse upon itself and form a black hole and suck up everything around it? The answer is most definitely no, though we will probably end up in a bad situation anyway. It is a widespread belief that our Sun will expand to a red giant, engulfing Mercury and Venus, while making our planet a hellish place where the oceans have boiled away. After this expansion, the star will rapidly shrink into a white dwarf, in which it will emit considerably smaller energy than it does presently.
