THE FIXED BLADE SABER

The idea of the fixed blade saber is the most common of all ideas for achieving the dream of the lightsaber:

Because most of the requirements for building a lightsaber cannot be achieved if one chooses to use light or lasers in the construction of the blade of the saber, the idea is the excite and isolate the light within a fixed beam that is physically connected to the hilt and is constructed of a durable material. Such sabers can be obtained easily from various companies across the internet or from comic shops etc. Because the blades are durable and clear, the hilt can be turned on or off to give the illusion of a retracted or emitted blade of light, and the saber can be used in an actual fight against another blade.
However this idea does not actually function as the lightsaber would:
  • Because the actual blade is not constructed of light, but of polycarbonate plastic into which light is emitted and excited, the device is not an actual lightsaber.
  • While the blades can be used in a more or less harmless duel, they will not cut through materials or burn as an actual lightsaber would. Also unlike an actual lightsaber, the light can be turned on or off but the actual blade is not made of light so the blade cannot be retracted and one is left with a polycarbonate shell with no light contained within it.
In the end, these lightsabers are nothing more than cheap (or not so cheap-some can be purchases for nearly $400) imitation of what is actually desired. They emulate the actual properties of a lightsaber at only the most basic levels and are generally only used by serious Star Wars fans who wish to collect them or use them in role-playing games.
