The application of ultracapacitors in modern society is beginning to grow. Ultracapacitors are being used in toys, experimental buses, and other electronics as a substitute to batteries. They are used by utilities as replacements for battery banks that are being used to buffer short-term outages on the power grid. They are used in solar tiles, to warm up copier machines, and used in high-end car stereo amplifiers to deliver the occasional surges of power without straining the battery. One of the most promising used of ultracapacitors is their use in automobiles. They are already being used in hybrid-electric cars to power pumps in the breaking system and power windshield wipers. They are also being used in the prototype fuel cell cars by providing the burst energy that the fuel cells fail to deliver.
