What is Alternative Energy?

Alternative energy, as its name implies, is an alternative form of energy to the kind of energy prevalent in our world today, namely gaining electrical power from fossil fuels. There are a number of different resources that can be used to gain comparable energy to that produced by power plants now being run off of coal, petroleum, etc. These resources that are being looked into, often fall into one of two categories: renewable & non-renewable energy resources. Again, as the name implies, renewable energy resources are resources that can be reused over and over again, and would allow for prolonged sustainability with little to no cost for this sustainability in many cases (9). Non-renewable energy resources are those that while allowing for power generation, it uses a temporary solution to solve a permenant problem, meaning that eventually our abundance of that type of fuel will dwindle until we are unable to use that type of resource anymore. Examples of renewable energy resources will be the main topic of this document as we will explore how energy is generated from several different types of resources, and will conclude with a discussion about Alaska's alternative energy possibilities in the future.
