Akasofu developed the idea of geomagnetic substorms, or a
distortion of the earth's magnetic field and subsequent disconnect of
the earth's field lines from bow to tail. These storms allow an iris to
form in the magnetosphere which allow charged plasma particles to
interact directly with the atmosphere.
