Beats

An interesting thing happens when we listen to two frequencies that are close together. When two frequencies are played at the same time, we hear them as an average of the frequencies in question(340 Hz and 360 Hz) will register as 350 Hz). However, the intensity of the sound wavers at a frequency of 10 Hz in what is refered to as beats. Do some extremely complex physics stuff and the equation for finding the displacement due to the sound waves is:
s(t)=[2Sm COSw't] COSwt
This is assuming that the amplitudes are equal. This can be simply expressed as:

fbeat=f1-f2

This neat little phenomenon is used by musicians to tune their instruments.
