So now we’ve got an image on the film.  The next step is to develop the film to produce negatives.  The chemicals used for this process are: film developer, stop bath, fixer, water rinse and photo finish.  The film developer, which is basic, produces the image on the film by interacting with the light-sensitive exposed silver crystals.  The results are the dark metallic silver, or the dark images on the film.  The stop bath is then used to stop the developer by using a mild acetic acid or sometimes water.  The fixer removes the leftover unexposed silver crystals from the film.  After the fixer it is safe to view the film in light.  The next step is a water rinse and we just rinse the chemicals off of the film.  Then we put a photo finish on it so the water doesn’t dry onto the film leaving a clear beautiful negative.
