Calculating R-Values and U-Values

The first step in determining the insulating capabilities of a cabin is determining how well the walls will conduct heat.  This is done by determining the R-value (thermal resistance) of the wall and subsequently determining the U-Value or heat transfer coefficient.  Each portion of the wall has different insulating capabilities, therefore, the thermal resistance must be determined for each section of the wall individually.

1.) Find R for each air film and the log individually

2.) Add the R Values together,

Rair1+Rlog+Rair2=Rtotal

3.) Find U (heat transfer coefficient)
