Geophysical Fluid Systems where we see Double Diffusive Convection

Double Diffusive Convection (DDC) occurs in many geophysical fluid systems. However its applications are not as             widespread in other fields as in oceanography. Here we present some example systems where DDC occurs.

1. DDC occurs in magma chambers giving rise to magma convection cells.

2. In atmosphere: Small scale instabilities may occur in the atmosphere when two density components like temperature and     humidity are oppositely stratified i.e, one stable and other unstable.

3. Sun: In the Sun heat and Helium diffusion occurs at different rates.

4. In Oceans: DDC has its much interesting effects in oceans. Conditions for salt fingers are often favorable in tropics and         subtropic oceans where warm salty water resides on top of cold-fresh water in the upper one kilometer depth. Here in this     project I would mainly focus on oceanographic system.
