Myths of the Aurora

.

Legends have been told of the mystical lights seen on the horizon for hundreds of years.  The Eskimos and Indians of North America have told stories to explain the intriguing lights.  Some believed that the lights were dancing spirits of loved ones waiting to lead them to the heavens while others believed them to be an omen of war -- the evil spirits of their slain enemies ready to fight again.

Folklore has been passed down since ancient times with stories about the dancing lights in the sky.  Some folklore tells of the dead playing ball in the sky with a walrus skull.

Scientists once believed the lights to be the sunlight reflecting off of the polar ice or the moon reflecting off of the ice crystals.  The lights are now known to be created by the sunspots and solar flares from the sun.

Regardless of  the myths and legends of this beautiful and yet mysterious lights, people still come from near and far to see the amazing light shows as they continue to grace the skies.
