Einstein's
theories of relativity are not just idle speculation about
a universe distant and unfeeling to the everyday lives of
humanity. Relativity, both general and special, has
many applications to modern technology. Many devices
that form the basis of electronics and communications
technology deal with particles that move fast enough that
relativistic effects have to be taken into account.
Satellites for television and telephone signals, as well
as any global positioning system, have to take into
account the effects from their high speeds and from the
Earth's gravity in order for their calculations to be
accurate enough to be useful. The entire idea that
matter can be transformed into energy was inferred from
relativity and is the basis upon which nuclear power
operates. |
