The Heartbeat
People like
to talk about how the body does so much stuff for us without
us thinking about it. The perfect example of this is the
heartbeat, we are incapable of actually controlling our
heartbeat with our mind, we have to actually exert ourselves
or do something really embarrassing to increase our heart
rate. But what is the source of the heartbeat, where does it
come from? The source of this is electricity. Our cells work a
little bit like batteries when it comes to creating electrical
current. A battery works by creating a charge imbalance across
the battery, which forces the free electrons on one side to
run through the wire enable to correct the imbalance. In the
same way our cells create a buildup of positively charged ions
and then release them across a membrane enable to generate a
current by the imbalance in charge. The SA node above the
right atria is the source of the electrical pulsations of the
heart. From here you get the source of all of the movement of
blood throughout your entire body.
