Forces on Canoes
- As seen in the image above, the
person exerts a force on the water using the
paddle. The water then exerts an equal force on
the paddle in the opposite direction because of
Newton's third law of motion.
- Since the paddle is part of the
canoe system, the force from the water pushes
the canoe forward.
- There is also the force of
gravity acting on the canoe. Assuming we are
canoeing on Earth, this force is equal to the
mass of the canoe multiplied by 9.8 m/s2
(the acceleration due to gravity on Earth).
- Additionally, there is also the
force of the water pushing up on the canoe to
make it float.
