STIRLING HEAT ENGINE
Who invented the Stirling Heat Engine?
Robert
Stirling was a Scottish clergyman and received the patent for
the heat
engine in 1816. Stirling’s design has been improved and
expanded on many times over the years.
What is
the Stirling Heat Engine and how does it work?
A Stirling Heat Engine is a heat engine that
is operated by the cyclic compression and expansion of
air at different temperatures, resulting in a
conversion of heat energy
to mechanical energy used for
mechanical work. Seen in figure 1. The
difference between the hot air on the bottom and the cold air
on top causes the displacer to expand and
retract the piston. The piston than cause the wheel to move
creating mechanical energy. Figure 2 is an image of
a real Stirling Heat Engine.
