How’s it possible?
Essentially when cats fall from above 7 stories high or 98 feet they have enough time to reach terminal velocity. Any time cats fall from heights roughly around 7 stories they cant reach terminal velocity so instead of stretching out wide they leave their legs down and use them as shock absorber's. This in turn leads to more leg related injuries.
However, when cats fall from above 7 stories they pancake out in order to increase the overall drag on them thus decreasing their terminal velocity. When cats do this they tend to land flat belly first on the ground. This, of course, results in injuries like collapsed lungs and broken ribs.
