  • Theory of Heat (1871)
A textbook published by Maxwell which demonstrated his research in thermodynamics. It introduced the world to the famous thought experiment Maxwell's Demon. Maxwell's Demon suggests that the second law of thermodynamics could be circumvented via a "demon" rapidly opening a door such that only fast molecules (those as higher temperatures) could pass. This would allow for the decrease in entropy of the system by increasing the temperature of one compartment, and decreasing the temperature of the other.

  • A Treatise of Electricity and Magnetism (1873)
This is perhaps Maxwell's most important work. The two volumes of the treatise proposed Maxwell's Equations as a series 20 equations which would later be consolidated into 4 of the most powerful equations in classical physics. It put the ideas of Faraday into mathematical form and allowed for the rapid advancement of the study of electricity and magnetism.
