Get Down!
An ice
skater will often hunch over
or crouch down
when skating fast or maneuvering. By
doing this they are doing two
main things: making themselves
more aerodynamic and also
shifting their center of gravity
downwards.
The increase
in aerodynamics comes
from the reduction of
surface area on the skater
when they get down.
This will decrease the
amount of overall
drag
on them,
making
it easier to
accelerate and hold
at consistent
higher speeds.
The shifting
down of the center of
gravity helps keeps the
skater's balance.
This
will let them
make
sharper turns, keep
their balance and shift
their momentum more
accurately.
