Ampere demonstrated that there is a relationship between electrical current and magnetism. He discovered that a magnet can be generated when electricity flows through a coiled wire. Ampere also discovered that electrical current that flows between two parallel wires will either repel or attract depending on the direction of the flow.

The astatic needle was invented by Ampere to detect and measure the magnitude of electrical currents. This  eventually led to the invention of the Galvanometer. The astatic needle is still present in modern Galvanometers. Ampere used the astatic needle to demonstrate the circuit pathway of the electrical current through a battery.
