Oil Separation
- The characteristics of crude oil
comes from the diverse chemical
hydrocarbon strengths
- As a result, the various
different compounds require differing
temperatures to separate
- The smaller organic compounds
(i.e. methane CH4, ethane C2H6, butane
C4H10) requires lower temperatures to
initiate separation from the crude oil
- Since the separation
temperature is so low, gas
separation from crude oil typically
occurs as the gas rises from the oil
reserves to the surfaces
- The more viscous oils require
higher temperatures to separate, which
entails to their sinking in a separator
(as shown above)
