Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa was born in July of
1894 in Kronstadt; now Saint Petersburg. During his
life, he was one of many leading Soviet physicists in
areas of low-temperature physics.
Personal Life Pyotr Kapitsa's father was named Leonid Petrovich Kapitsa. He worked in the military as an engineer. Pyotr's mother, was named Olga Leronimovna Kapitsa. She came from the Ukrainian noble family Stebnytski, and worked as an educator and researcher of folklore. Pyotr Kapitsa worked as an abulance driver during World War II for two years. Afterwards, he studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Petrograd and graduated in 1918. In 1921, he began working at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge under the direction of Ernest Rutherford. Together they experimented with cloud chambers; chambers filled with gasses and water vapor. In 1927, Kapitsa married Anna Alekseevna Krylova. They had two sons, Sergei and Andrei. Sergei grew up to also become a physicist, and is best-known for hosting the popular Soviet science television show: "Evident but Incredible." Andrei Kapitsa, however, became a geographer and Antarctic explorer. Pyotr Kapitsa died on April 8, 1984 in Moscow. |
