Three basic concepts behind the rocket are Newton's laws of motion.

1st: "an object will remain at rest or in constant motion unless acted upon by an external force"

2nd:                                          F = ma

3rd: "for every action, an equal and opposite reaction occurs."

Wernher von Braun's design for the V-2 rocket utilized liquid propellant: a mixture of alcohol and water would burn with liquid oxygen as a source of thrust.

The Saturn V had three stages: the first stage was used as the initial ignition; the second stage was responsible for propelling the craft through the upper atmosphere; the third stage had two phases of burn time, allowing the craft to align its trajectory and enter the Moon's orbit.
