The Largest Tsunamis

There has been many severe Tsunamis in history that has left mayhem in the places were they have struck. According to the ranker website the worst Tsunami in history so far was the 2004 Indian Ocean one that released close to 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs amount of energy from below the sea. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake was the largest recorded in 40 years. There were about 229,866 found dead and the wave had traveled as much as 3,000 miles to Africa.

The second largest Tsunami recorded was the 1908 Messina Earthquake/Tsunami that hit a city in the island of Sicily. The Tsunami was 40 feet high and had an earthquake before hand of a magnitude of 7.1. There was approximately 123,000 dead found after days of searching for people.

The third largest Tsunami was the 1755 Lisbon disaster that contained not only a Tsunami, but a fire and an earthquake as well. This earthquake had an epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean about 200km of Cape St. Vincent in southern Portugal and this earthquake was one of the deadliest ones in history. The Tsunami engulfed the harbour and the cities being as tall as 66 feet tall.
