Engine
Volkswagen's highly modified Polo R has a four cylinder,
1.6 Liter, in line, 315 horsepower turbocharged engine. A
turbocharger helps to increase the compression in an engine,
and therefore supports quicker combustion of fuel, which
increases power output. It produces its maximum horsepower
at 6250 rpm and its max torque, at 430 Nm, or 317 ftlb, at
5000 rpm.
Transmission
All that power has to take some path from the engine to the ground, and it takes its route through the transmission. The car has a six speed sequential gear box, which shifts nearly instantly, and helps keep the car near its maximum horsepower range. Its hydraulically activated double-disk clutch is the part of the transmission that ultimately connects and disconnects the wheels from the engine. The vehicles gearbox final drive splits the torque 50/50 to the front and rear axles at all times. At the front and rear are limited slip differentials, which help to keep power flowing to all four wheels even in situations where there is unequal traction between wheels.
Suspension
The Polo R has adjustable dampening, which can vary the
rate at which oscillations die out when the car hits a bump.
When the vehicle is set up for racing on tarmac, the
suspension travels about 18 cm. On gravel, it travels 27.5
cm.
Result
The engineers strive to reduce weight, and increase the
amount of power in the car, and this has resulted in this
machine being able to do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, and have a top
speed of 124 mph.
