Summary and
Discussion
The system will be a friction
hoist to a depth of 1,200 feet, operating on an AC
motor with a 78 second cycle. There will be
two twelve-ton skips supported by four
flattened-strand ropes of 1-3/8" diameter. The
drums will be ten feet in diameter, and the system
will have a peak horsepower requirement of 2,325 hp.
In several cases throughout the
calculations, values were rounded up to meet
standard sizes available within the industry (in
particular, the skip and payload weights, and the
rope thickness and drum diameters). Due to
this rounding, later values, especially horsepower,
will be slightly exaggerated over the actual
requirement. Given that there is to be a
factor of safety of at least 7.0 (in this case,
8.0), these inflated values serve to raise the F.S.
without being disproportionately large.
