Rope Size

Based upon the following figure, the flattened strand rope is most appropriate for
the Koepe system being designed.  The D/d ratio is constant across all depths.



Knowing that the rope will be a flattened strand, the Factor of Safety can be determined from this plot, also found in the SME Handbook:

k1 = 46.0
k2 = 0.00090
Factor of Safety ~ 8.0

The diameter of the rope is calculated as follows:


The rope diameter is rounded up to the nearest value found in Table 7.1:

Using the value of 1-3/8 inches, the rope weight will be 3.18 lbs/ft.
Then, the rope strength is equal to:


Rope Strength = k1*d^2 = (46.0)*(1-3/8)^2 = 87 tons
