In order to understand the potential health risks of cellular phone use, it is important to examine the physical properties of their transmission and operation.
Although cell phone radiation is non-ionizing, and therefore theoretically fairly safe, long term exposure may pose a health risk. In addition carcinogenic concerns, cell phones have been shown to heat tissue, specifically that of the human head by induction. While the full effects of cell phone radiation aren't yet clear, there are a number of methods for reducing exposure. |
Heating by Induction
The thermograph above shows a person after 15 minutes of cell phone use. Although the effects of this heating are not entirely understood, a 2011 study demonstrated that after 50 minutes of use, the side of the brain closest to the cell phone metabolized a significantly higher level of glucose[8]. Again, the ramifications of this are not yet known. The image below shows the areas of increased glucose metabolization in yellow.
