Minimizing Exposure and Risk
The first and most obvious way to limit exposure levels is to limit the amount of time talking on a cell phone. The FDA also advocates the use of speaker phone settings and hands free headsets[9].
There are also many products advertised to shield the user from electro-magnetic emissions. These are not supported by the FDA. In fact, the shielding materials in these products can cause cell phones to automatically increase their transmission power. This defeats their purpose and could potentially increase exposure. When not in use, cell phones should be stored away from the body. Even when not in direct operation they continue to transmit information. Men particularly should avoid carrying cell phones in their pants pockets. Studies have shown that those who carried cell phones in this way demonstrated an 11% decrease in healthy sperm[11]. |
