Later Years

  • In 1900 Tesla began work on an enourmous broadcasting tower on Long Island in New York, funded again by J.P. Morgan. It was intended to transmit data on a global scale and provide wireless energy, claims stating it could light lamps several miles away.
  • The project was eventually abandoned however due to financial insecurities, the tower being far too expensive to turn a profit. Morgan withdrew his funding.
  • Tesla workd on few other projects after that, a lack of money keeping most of them from coming to fruition.
  • In 1915 it was rumored he would share a Nobel Prize with Edison, but no such award came. Some speculate both had refused on grounds that neither wanted to share the award, but it's more likely Edison and Tesla were passed up due to their animosity towards each other.
  • Tesla would receive the Edison medal in 1917 from the American Institue of Electrical Engineers, their highest honor.
  • Nikola Tesla died on January 7, 1943 of coronary thrombosis. He had obtained more than 700 patents for his work during his lifetime.
