"Whatever floats your boat"...
...In this case, its the Buoyancy Force!
When it comes to keeping a sailboat afloat, it follows
Archimedes' Principle. The principle states that "a
fluid exerts an upward buoyant force on an object immersed in
or floating on the fluid. The magnitude of the buoyant
force equals the weight of the fluid displaced by the object"
(Knight 420).
F=pVg
(p=density of fluid, V=volume displacement, &
g=gravity)
In the example given to the right, the buoyant force is:
F=(1030kg/m³)(140ft³×1m³/9ft³)(9.8m/s²)
F=(16022.22kg)(9.8m/s²)
F=157017.78N
