Knowing
how bees fly can aid in developing and
designing propellers/wings on aircrafts that
are more stable and agile in the air (Phillips,
2005). Aircrafts modeled after bees have
the potential to carry large or heavy loads of
cargo over long distances while still staying
relatively stable and airborne. This
introduces opportunities for disaster relief
in the sense that more supplies would be able
to reach affected areas. It also opens up
possibilities of militarized drones that would
need to maneuver over rough or difficult
terrains.
With that said, having a basic understanding
of how bees (as well as other insects) fly is
important because it provides an explanation
to a question that baffled scientists in prior
years. Despite what The Bee Movie claims,
bee flight does not break the rules of
physics.
