The Anatomy

The body of a bee is split up into 3 main parts: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.

Four wings are attached to the thorax. The fore wings are much larger than the hind wings, and both are used for flight and steering. Flapping is achieved by the contraction and relaxation of the longitudinal and vertical muscles within the thorax that are attached to the wings. The downward movement of the wings are due to the contraction of the longitudinal muscles and relaxation of the vertical muscles, while the upward movements are due to the longitudinal relaxing and the vertical muscles contracting. In order to keep up with high wing stroke frequencies, each time the nervous system fires a signal, the flight muscles contract multiple times (Collison, 2016).
