Every year, landslides cost $3.5 billion in damages in the United States, and kill 25-50 people. Every slope is susceptible, but some areas are more prone to slides than others. For instance, the 1983 Thistle slide was enlarged by another slide in the same valley in 1998. The figure to the left shows another landslide just north of the 1983 slide (both in red).

The economic impact of the Thistle, Utah landslide was enormous. Damages were estimated to be about $200 million. US Highway 6 was rerouted over the mountain, two new train tunnels had to be blasted out of the adjacent mountain, two drainage tunnels were bored into the new dam to allow the Spanish Fork River to flow, and the residents of the town had to be relocated. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company estimated $78 million in lost revenue while the line was rerouted. This is still the costliest landslide in US history.

It's so ridiculous that the only way I can get this thing to fit properly is to add a  of black text and even then it's not really working. What's up with that?! It's kind of stupid, if you ask me. Oh, we;;. I didn't design the thing.
