Mass vs. Velocity

  • "Depending on the gun, the mass of a bullet usually ranges between 0.02 kilograms and 0.04 kilograms. The mass of a bullet depends on the caliber and type of gun used. A bullet can be fired from a revolver, pistol, rifle, machine gun or other weapon." Mass of a Bullet - The Physics Factbook

  • For example, we will look at the different velocities of bullets being fired from a 300 caliber win mag comparing a 180g bullet to a 200g bullet in the picture below:

  • As you can see, the 200g bullets max velocity is continuously less than that of the 180g bullet using the different powders.
  • However this does not necessarily mean the 200g bullet is less effective, in the next slide we will look at the kinetic energy these different bullets poses.
