Mass vs. Velocity
- "Depending on the gun, the mass
of a bullet usually ranges between 0.02
kilograms and 0.04 kilograms. The mass of a
bullet depends on the caliber and type of gun
used. A bullet can be fired from a revolver,
pistol, rifle, machine gun or other weapon." Mass
of a Bullet - The Physics Factbook
- For example, we will look at the
different velocities of bullets being fired from
a 300 caliber win mag comparing a 180g bullet to
a 200g bullet in the picture below:
https://www.barnesbullets.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/300WinMagForWeb.pdf
- As you can see, the 200g bullets
max velocity is continuously less than that of
the 180g bullet using the different powders.
- However this does not
necessarily mean the 200g bullet is less
effective, in the next slide we will look at the
kinetic energy these different bullets poses.
