Why is Buoyancy Important?

One of the more important things about swimming is making sure that you can stay on top of the water any this is achieved by buoyancy. In order to float in water the object must be less dense than the water, and if it is then it is considered to be buoyant.
The principle behind this is called the Archimedes' principle, which states that any object (no matter the shape) that is suspended in a fluid,
is acted upon by an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by the object.

Buoyancy is just a more complicated way of saying normal force, however as indicated in the figure above there is a bit more to it than just resting on the ground
This allows swimmers to manipulate different parts of their strokes and techniques, such as the start, which enables them to determine how far they go  under the water.
