Applications of the Archimedes Screw

The Archimedes screw is well known for it's use in water cisterns and delivering water from one area to another; However, the screw has been used in other areas as well.

According to sciencefacts.net, "Loose granular materials can flow through it as well. It can be used as a conveyor when turned by a motor to move granular materials like food grains, plastic granules and liquids from one place to another."

As pictured to the side, this combine boasts the spherical screw design, but each end is tilted towards the center (instead of tilted to travel along the full length of the machine to deposit the materials at one end).

Archimedes screws have also been researched for their ability to produce power as a generator. Dellinger et al. has researched their potential as a generator; their conclusions base the screw as a turbine, giving the final results as a possible energy source, though they determine more testings of wider varieties need to be made, as well an improvement on the screw body.

Last but not least, a common item seen on tv and movies in swanky parties; The chocolate fountain. As shown in this picture from howitworksdaily.com, the funnel is transparent to allow us to see the inner mechanisms of this application of the Archimedes screw.
