Introduction
What are underwater earthquakes?
Underwater earthquakes are--you guessed it---earthquakes that
occur on the ocean floor. For this topic, the focus will be on
the relationship between these earthquakes and the dreaded
tsunamis. Earthquakes basically occurs when tectonic plates
move; when the stress breaks, the sudden release of energy
causes the waves that are felt during an earthquake. This
applies to earthquakes on land as well as on the ocean floor,
which then becomes tsunami.
When earthquakes occur on the ocean floor, it becomes much more
than when in land because it disturbs not only the earth's
crust, but the water on the surface as well. The destructive
waves of a tsunami greatly primarily depends on the intensity of
the underwater earthquake; the closer to the epicenter, the more
destructive it is.
