The Spellplague

      Faerun met its next global tragedy in the year 1385 DR. Shar, the goddess of darkness, and Cyric, the god of murder, plotted to kill Mystra in the hopes that Shar could gain control over the Weave. Cyric managed to kill Mystra, but Shar was unable to control the Weave, Mystra's death causing magic to go awry.

     This chaos in the Weave caused a burst of azure flame, the Spellplague, to spread over Faerun, killing wizards and reshaping Faerun. Wild magic was much more abundant, as were areas of dead magic where the Weave was damaged the most.

     Even without the goddess to guide the Weave, it still remained, and new wizards soon learned how to control the arcane energies again, which were more easy to access, but more difficult to control.

Great Bursts of Fire!

      This is without a doubt the most powerful and most destructive version of burning hands so far. The spell is an "encounter power" meaning that the caster had to take a small rest before casting it a second time. Previously novice wizards could only cast burning hands a few times a day before tiring, but now, with frequent breaks and pauses,  even comparatively unskilled wizards could cast this spell over and over without limit. It is described as a "Burst 5" area of flame, meaning that it fills five 5 ft. by 5 ft. by 5ft. cubes with flame, giving the spell effect a volume of 15625 ft3 or 442.45 m3.

Vcube = s3

     Using this volume of air for our energy equation tells us that the spell requires 736,160 kJ of arcane energy. This amount of energy is 15 times the needed energy from the 3rd edition version of this spell, and 7,147 times the need energy of the 2nd edition version.

    This makes it fairly obvious that magic was very strong and comparatively unregulated.
