The Bow Drill is regarded as the most efficient method for creating fire by friction.

Step 1: Prep
Make a V-shaped notch in the hearth board, create a small depression adjoined to it with a rock or knife tip. Loosely attach string to a stick to create a "bow", this bow should be fairly sturdy. Create a bearing block.

Step 2: Rub-A-Dub
Place the tip of the drill into the depression on the hearth board. Place the bearing block on top of the drill and maintain downward pressure. Loop the drill within the string of the bow. Push and pull the bow to rotate the drill until the friction produces an ember.

Step 3: Coax the Flame
Gently tap the ember onto the ember box. Transfer the ember into the tinder bundle. Blow into the tinder bundle until a flame is produced.
