Types of Welding

For the purposes of this project I will only be looking at Mig welding.

Stick

With Stick welding both the feed rod and the welding gas are combined so no shielding gas tanks are needed. The new feed rod with the solidified gas is fed as the electrode instead of tungsten which is used in Tig welding.

In order to feed the rod the welder has to manually push the feed rod through the welding gun with the same hand that is holding the welding gun.

Tig

With Tig welding The feed rod is fed with one hand while the welding gun is held with the other. The electrode for this Tig welder is a tungsten rod. An inert gas usually argon is spewed around the tungsten to prevent oxidation of the weld.

Tig welding is the least forgiving to impurities in the metal out of the three shown here.

Mig

With Mig welding the feed rod is automatically fed through the gun. The feed rod also acts as the electrode. Unlike Stick welding Mig requires an inert gas to surround the weld.

This is the most commonly used type of welding as it is the most forgiving to impurities in the metal and it is self contained (doesn't need two hands).
