❆ Riding in the deep snow is
a lot different than riding on a groomed trail,
therefore the physics of riding in powder is different
as well. The main aspect of riding in powder is
obviously the depth of the snow. Powder is much deeper
than other snow, and also much less dense. This lack
of density causes you to sink in more, especially if
you don't keep your speed up. This usually
results in a decrease of speed. Although the friction
of some nice, new powder is significantly less on your
board (smoother powder, therefore making it less
likely for you to catch an edge) the depth and density
still slow you down slightly. Powder riding is also
different than trail riding in that it brings upon the
feeling of floating above the ground, again because of
its low density. Trail riding and powder riding are
said to be two completely different things by riders,
and the physics of it shows just that.
