Gravity
Gravity is the real reason
why roller coasters are possible. Gravity a long
range force that is exerted on all objects on
Earth. The force of gravity, like electromagnetic
force, is a long range force, because it is
exerted over long distances, without
contacting/touching the object experiencing the
force. While the normal force, or a push or pull
force, is a contact force because the object or
person causing the force to be exerted on a object
or person is in contact with the object
experiencing the force. As defined by Britannica,
gravity is the universal force of attraction
acting between all matter. At Earth's surface the
acceleration of gravity is about 9.8 meters per
second squared. The force of gravity is the mass
of an object or person in kilograms multiplied by
the acceleration of gravity. Gravitational
potential energy (Ug) is one of the two
main types of energy involved in the motion of
roller coasters. Energy will be further explained
in the next page.
