Her mother was the director for one of the best schools for girls in the area. She died of tuberculosis when Marie was 11. Marie's father was a professor of physics and math at a lyceum (public lecture hall) in Warsaw. Marie Curie was a good student as a child and throughout high school, but was unable to attend the men-only university in Warsaw. After working as a governess and tutor to help her sister Bronya through school for about five years, she went to live with Bronya in Paris where Bronya returned the favor. Marie enrolled the Sorbonne in 1891 and eventually she got her licentiateship in Mathematical Science and Physics. She met her husband Pierre Curie in Paris and they got married in 1895. The Curie's had two children together and devoted their lives to research. They began to do research together and he even gave up his own research on crystals to help Marie with her research on radiation. Together they discovered Polonium and Radium through extensive research. Marie Curie eventually died in 1934 of leukemia caused by her extended exposure to radiation.
