His Computer

Hawking's computer system has enabled him to continue to write and speak. This computer, that has brought many of Hawking's ideas and lectures to life, is sponsored and provided by Intel Corporation. The computer system consists of a tablet mounted on the wheelchair, which is powered by Hawking's wheelchair, a speech-generating device, and a special infrared switch allowing him to control the computer with his cheek. Based on his cheek movement, Hawking can use the cursor to surf the internet, write books using an onscreen keyboard, or give lectures by feeding written material to the speech-generator. The computer's main interface is a program called ACAT, which was written by Intel.

In December of 2014, Hawking got an upgrade on his 20 year old computer system. The upgrade sped up the system allowing him to double his rate of speech and write ten times quicker. Hawking's one request was to keep his trademark synthesized voice (Boyle).

Hawking has also shared how amazed he is with the breakthrough in technology and its advantage to those with disabilities, including himself.
