The history of the idea
The idea was conceived of in 1994 by the Mexican scientist
Miguel Alcubierre. The idea was by using a differential form
of Einstein's formulae of general relativity a loophole, so to
speak,
can be found in the formulae stating that while one cannot
travel
faster than light, it is hypothetically possible to create a
region of
denser spacetime in front of your spaceship in front of you
and
expand spacetime behind you, which would warp space around
you;
while you would not be moving faster than light, space around
you would and would simply carry you with it.

This would create a warp bubble, so to speak. While this could
potentially
be very useful, there are a number of reasons that it is not
currently possible.
