Parts of an Airplane The basic airplane today has five general parts. The power plant which generates some sort of power to move the airplane forward. The landing gear so that the plane can taxi takeoff and land, the wings to generate lift, the fuselage to hold passengers and items, and the empennage which controls vertical and horizontal movement on their axis (which will be mentioned later in future pages)                                                                                                             Up next: How planes generate lift
