Background
Blowouts
occur in both oil and natural gas wells. A blowout
is an uncontrollable release of oil or natural gas due to a pressure
gradient. Iconic blowouts are usually pictured as oil gushing from the top of a well.
Blowouts were a common occurrence in high
pressure reservoir oil exploration before
pressure control systems were created in the
1920s.

These new control systems allowed reservoir under
high pressure to be controlled.
Sometimes these systems fail
and extreme measures have to
be taken to control a well. Blowouts are extremely
dangerous and have enough pressure to send drilling
strings out of the well and can cause a lot of
damage. The dangers and techniques used to control
and maintain well stability
while drilling is a lot of work and there is a good
amount of physics behind the whole process.
